MBADC American Idol Armchair Quarterback 2006, Season 5 (Week 3)

American Idol, from the perspective of someone who's booked artists at the national-level: who we like in the competition, what works, what doesn't work, what contestants can do to improve their chances of success, and advice you can apply to your own career.

Week Three Auditions

Episode airing Tuesday, January 31, 2006  (Las Vegas, NV)

Based on the auditions from tonight's episode, we like Mecca Madison (hometown: Las Vegas, NV) for her unique voice and nice tone. She also has a striking look; if she makes it to the finals, it will be interesting to see the results of AI's makeover. Because of the unique qualities of her voice and the ease with which her voice seems to flow out, we're voting Mecca Madison tonight's Voice of the Night.

Also interesting:

We're not sure what audition Paula Abdul was watching, but we loved the audition of Heather Ward (hometown: Salisbury, MD). We liked her voice, but her personality and uniqueness of song choice had us from the first note of "Red Neck Woman." Her song choice of "Red Neck Woman" was a little edgy because Heather Ward is African American, and, like Randy Jackson, we loved that she was the one who sang it. Kudos to Heather for taking a creative risk, knowing just how far to take it, and for making it work.

Ryan Seacrest Smart Quip of the Night:  Nothing to write home about, but the way he said "Camelot?" when naming off various places he might be standing in the middle of (at the beginning of the episode) got a hearty chuckle out of our Webmaster.

Episode airing Wednesday, February 1, 2006 (Austin, TX)

Based on tonight's auditions...we like Jason Horn (hometown Longview, TX). We love his tone; his voice is clear without too much vibrato. Good song selection will be key for him.

Also interesting: 16-year old William Makar (hometown The Woodlands, TX). We're glad he's getting a shot because there's something unique there.

Ryan Seacrest Smart Quip of the Night: "But have we saved the best for last? No!" Also, Paula's muskrat laugh when the Randy Jackson look-alike came in had us in stitches.

Ok fess up: How many of you sat in your living rooms trying to sing with your mouth closed like Ashley Jackson? Us too.
