HOW TO SELL 10,000 CDs NEXT YEAR...OR STILL MAKE MONEY IF YOU DON'T
Moderator: Bruce Haring, DIY Convention
Panelists:
Bob Bernstein, Little Dog Records
Jeff Semones, m80 interactive
Cary Baker, Conqueroo
Pete Kronowits, Intel
Michelle Robertson, MP3.com/Musicane
This is something that we all are striving for. They all seemed to agree
that knowing who your target fan base and market are, and focusing on them,
is the most important thing. You need to have something to sell on your web
site and at your shows. Fans can help you sell CD’s. The other point is that
you really need to perform and tour to build your fan base. Check into
affinity marketing, which works great on myspacecom.com: “If you like this
artist, you will like us”.
GETTING MUSIC IN VIDEO GAMES
Moderator: Mara Schwartz, Bug Music
Panelists:
David Kim, Vivendi-Universal Games
Jonathan Palmer, Sony Publishing
Sasha Ross, Bicycle Music
Brad Rains, Windswept Pacific
Someone said that video games are the radio stations of the age and I think
that’s true. This panel talked about what video game companies are looking
for, and what avenues you can use to get your music to them.
DIY DEMO DERBY
Moderator: Mitchell Frank, Spaceland Productions
Panelists:
Liz Garo, The Echo
Heather Peggs, A&R, Capitol
Joe Rinaldi, booker, The Viper Room
Brian McPherson, attorney
I have been to other demo derbies, and this one was a little different. Most
of the discussion was about how to package your demos to get gigs at clubs.
The panelists listened to tracks submitted beforehand and gave their
opinions and suggestions to the artists.
MUSIC MARKETING, PUBLICITY, PROMOTION
Moderator: Maria Armoudian, KPFK/songwriter
Panelists:
Steve Levesque, Luck Media & Marketing
Cary Baker, Conqueroo
Howard Rosen, radio promoter
Panos Panay, Sonicbids/artist manager
Tess Taylor, NARIP
This topic seems to baffle most artists, including me. This panel dove into
the different ways to market your music, and how to use publicity to expose
yourself to a wider market and let people know about you and what you do. .
A lot of good tips were given, though I could have used a whole day with
this panel.
