Q. Who are the names and faces
behind MusicBizAdvice.com, and what is their music industry background and
experience?
MusicBizAdvice.com was started in 1997 by our Founder / Editor-in-Chief,
Randi Reed, a music business consultant who specializes in troubleshooting
and short-term projects.
For further information and the story of how MusicBizAdvice.com came about,
check out Randi's media bio and
quick bio.
Information on our other staff members and freelancers can be found in our
Liner Notes section.
Q. Who writes the articles on
MusicBizAdvice.com?
The majority (97%) of the articles on MusicBizAdvice.com are original
material written exclusively for us. To help protect our writers from
copyright infringement, when freelance material is used on MusicBizAdvice.com we
usually secure the right to host the article exclusively.
Here's how to tell who wrote what:
Articles written for us by freelance writers contain bylines (eg.,"by Joe
Writer), plus the writer's biographical information in a mini-bio at the end
of the article.
If an article has a byline but no mini bio at the end of an
article, the writer is a permanent MusicBizAdvice.com staffer.
Other stuff (material such as lists, our music industry
glossary, and other articles without a byline): These are usually written by Founder /
Editor-in-Chief Randi Reed (who figured readers would tire of seeing her
name blasted all over the site), or Webmaster / Researcher Extraordinaire
Jinjer Hundley (who's a humble sort who really should take more credit for
her work). This FAQ, for example, was written by your friendly Founder
/ Editor-in-Chief, with formatting and linking provided by--you guessed
it--Webmaster Extraordinaire.
Q. Are you accepting
management clients?
At this time, MusicBizAdvice.com is not taking percentage-based,long-term management
clients. Our Founder / Editor-in-Chief, Randi Reed, is a music business
consultant who specializes in troubleshooting and short-term
projects for independent artists and music industry companies.
Q. What is the difference
between an artist manager and a music business consultant?
An artist manager has a long-term business relationship with an artist,
handles all aspects of the artist's career, and is usually paid on a
commission (percentage) basis from the artist's earnings.
A Music business consultant is hired for short-term, specific projects or
very short-term consultation by managerless or self-managed artists, or by music industry
companies whose area of expertise is different than the consultant's.
Consultants are usually paid either by the hour, or a flat rate fee for a
specific project, like an attorney.
Like good artist managers and good
attorneys, good consultants are choosy about their clients.
The position of Music Business consultant is relatively new to the industry,
coming about over the past ten years with the rise of the self-managed,
independent artist.
