The Starving Musician Recipes

Easy Pool Party Menu

You don't need a Hollywood-size pool to have a great pool party: Throw some kids' wading pools on the patio or on the lawn and do it Starving Musician style. (Just watch out for the kids and pets, please.)

California London Broil
Assorted Mixed Greens with Rock Star Dijon Vinaigrette
Grilled Corn on the Cob with butter, sea salt, and freshly cracked ground pepper
Warm French bread (optional, but it stretches out the menu for a Starving Musician's pool party)
Cherries and White Chocolate on Ice, or Cheesecake from your favorite bakery (or both, if you're feeling flush or can con your manager into bringing the cheesecake).

How to Grill Corn on the Cob

Corn on the cob, still in husks
100% cotton or linen string or Butcher's twine
Butter
Sea Salt (Fleur de sel)
Freshly ground black pepper

For each ear of corn you plan to serve, pull back the husks, but leave attached at the base of the corn. Remove silks and rinse corn carefully but thoroughly. Put husks back into place and tie the open end with string.

Soak the corn in very cold water or ice water for 15-20 minutes for top of the grill cooking, weighting them down with a heavy plate if necessary to keep them submerged (soak for 30 minutes if you plan to cook the corn buried in hot coals). Be sure the string is thoroughly wet before cooking to keep it from burning.

When ready to grill, drain and shake off excess water. Grill on top of the grill 3-4 " from moderate coals 12-15 minutes, turning frequently. Or, roast buried in coals for 10 minutes. Husk carefully (wear potholders or heatproof gloves--available at home improvement centers); serve hot with butter, sea salt, and freshly-ground pepper.
