MBADC Quick Tip:
Know the Difference Between an Interview and a
Consultation When Hiring an Attorney or Manager (and the Difference in
Price)
When hiring a manager, attorney, or other team member who
charges an hourly fee, it's important to know the difference between an
interview and a consultation.
An interview --think "job interview"--is an informational meeting to
see if you want to hire the person, and for them
to see if they want to work with you. With the exception of some consultants
and acting coaches in the acting field who sometimes use the word
"interview," in the music industry interviews are free of charge.
A consultation--think "consult your attorney"--is a problem solving meeting
with an expert (who is typically paid by the hour). Consultations are
usually something you're charged for. Occasionally some managers or
attorneys offer a "free consultation," but it's more of an interview to
determine to feasibility of working together. Don't expect a detailed game
plan or real problem solving; that's not fair and would be a little like
getting engaged on the first date.
Regardless of the terminology used by the person you're meeting with, always
ask if there's a charge for the meeting if you're not sure. Professionals
appreciate people who understand that time is valuable.
