Quotes
From Editor-in-Chief Randi Reed
On MusicBizAdvice.com: "My
original dream
for MusicBizAdvice.com was to have a multi-platinum artist surfing our site at the exact
same moment as a kid in a small town who's dreaming about being a rock star. And having
both of them find the information they're looking for. Dreams do come true."
The biggest mistake beginning artists make: "Not taking time to learn
about the business. Even if you're going to hire someone to handle something
for you, you have to know enough to be able to hire the best person for the
job. Knowing something about the business saves money on consultation fees
too, because the hourly fee isn't gobbled up by explanations. Time is money,
and knowledge saves it."
The biggest mistake independent artists make: "Being rude to an
executive because they work in the mainstream, commercial music industry.
You never know what someone's plans are. Many execs are just as unhappy with
the current state of the industry as independent musicians are, and for all
you know, that person might be planning to start a company or launch a
product that changes the current business model."
On working with artists: "When I'm working with an artist on a show
day, I have a
policy of not going out on the stage unless there's a problem that requires me to.
Walking across that stage would be like someone just sitting down at my desk
and using my computer, so I've never been comfortable using it as a shortcut
to get from Point A to Point B during the day. Maybe it's weird, but it's
kind of my way of saying, 'Incase I don't tell you, I have a lot of respect
for you as an artist.' "
On living with a chronic illness: "Some days you have to squeeze really hard to get
the lemonade. Other days you make a big lemon pie and pile on the meringue."
On working with CFIDS: "From a business standpoint, a lot of people would say going
public about having CFIDS isn't a good idea since one of the rules of business is that
you always look for your competitor's weakness. But I made a conscious decision to turn my
illness into a strength. If someone's going after me because of it, that's their weakness,
not mine."
Early memories: "When I was 5 or 6 and my friends and I played house, we didn't play
house the regular way. We pretended to be on tour with the Osmonds, and we'd take turns being
Marie or one of the brothers' wives. I had no concept of touring or how that whole thing
worked, but we did have it scheduled out--showtime was always at imaginary 8:00, and right
afterward we'd get on the plane to the next show, and our 'house' was a hotel.
Luckily for the people I work with, my routing skills have improved since
then...Back then it was Hawaii, then London, then Tokyo!"
On staying a fan: "It's easy to become jaded and not appreciate getting to see great
shows. I try to save something from every show, because I always want to remember what
it's like to be a fan. If there's a list and no ticket stubs or passes, I'll save a
cocktail napkin or something."###
