October 2003 Steve "Chief"
Loebig
One of the most beloved
Superheroes of the live touring business, Steve "Chief" Loebig, was removed from
life support on September 26, 2003. He had been on life support for a week as a result of
injuries sustained at his home in Nashville when he was fatally hit over the head with one
of his own guitars. Some reports say he was also robbed of his music souvenirs before being left to die.
A suspect, Johnny Brian Whittemore of Cannon County, TN, has been apprehended and charged.
Detectives say Loebig and Whittmore may have been involved in an argument. They also say
at least two other people may have been present and that an investigation is underway to
find out whether or not they were involved in the murder.
A memorial trust fund has been established to help Chief's family cover medical and burial
expenses:

"Chief" Loebig was known throughout the business for his work ethic and can-do
attitude. According to many who worked with him, he possessed the rare ability to have a larger than life personality
yet still remain down to Earth. "Chief" was Ricky Van Shelton's rigger, stage
manager and body guard and worked with many other artists during his career.
All of us at musicbizadvice.com send
our deepest condolences to Chief's family, as well as to his extended family of touring
brothers and sisters.
