Cool Stuff We Love March 2008

Cool Eats for the Bus

Almond Butter-- Like peanut butter but it's a little too...peanutty? Or is someone on the tour bus allergic to peanuts? Almond Butter just may be your ticket. We love that almond butter is high in Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, antioxidants, and plant sterols--stuff a hardworking musician on the road can use but rarely gets. We also love that it's high protein and monounsturated fat (the good stuff that's in olive oil), and researchers report that it's thought to lower cholesterol and risk of diabetes. But mostly, we love that it tastes great (our Editor likes it on apple slices for breakfast), is inexpensive, and easy to store in the bus fridge. We get our organic almond butter at Trader Joe's

Homemade Smoothies -- For a long time, we rejected the idea of the smoothie for breakfast. It just seemed a little too...L.A. for our taste. That is, until one day when one of us was faced with a leftover mango, a few organic blueberries we'd paid an arm and a leg for but were heading South quick, and a banana that had seen better days but would have made a hell of a muffin, had it had a couple of friends left from the bunch. ...

Ed whipped it all up in the blender with some orange juice that was hanging out in the fridge, and threw in some of our liquid vitamin supplements and the contents of a calcium capsule. Voila! Breakfast in a glass, easily enjoyed alongside a small handful of walnuts or almonds (yeah, those again; we eat a lot of 'em around here) while reading the morning email.

We love that it was tasty, easy, and fat free. We also loved that the energy seemed to kick in much faster and last longer than your run of the mill piece of fruit. We're hooked!
