Cool Stuff We Love March 2005

Skew's

Finding healthy, inexpensive take-out isn't easy, and Skew's is one we love enough to actually look forward to going to. With entree skewers like Maui Chicken, Citrus BBQ Chicken, Teriyaki Steak, Thai BBQ Shrimp or even Veg-out Tofu, plus a variety of side dishes, there's something for nearly everyone's taste, food program, and budget. We especially love the easy mix-and-matchability of menu items, and the Maui Chicken skewers just plain rock. Skew's tagline is "Beyond Teriyaki," and they're not whistlin' Dixie: we haven't discussed even half the items on their menu, such as a variety of soft tacos. For the busiest among us, Skew's also offers catering and delivery. Two Los Angeles locations: Westwood and Downtown L.A.

Skew's Downtown L.A.
(One California Plaza)

WeGo Facial Tissues

Anyone who's ever slammed on the brakes during cold season or allergy season and had their trusty box of tissues fall off the passenger seat will appreciate this: a mini-box of pop-up tissues packed in what looks like a Starbuck's cup, sized to fit in your car's drink holder. "Praise God!" shrieked our Researcher Extraordinaire, who once nearly got into a car accident when her own trusty tissue box slipped dangerously near her driving foot. "This is enough to make you turn religious!" Great for small desks or table tops, too. Available at various supermarkets and drug stores, in regular and antibacterial.

Springtime in Los Angeles

You may think summer is prime time in L.A., but for the scenery and fabulous weather our favorite time of year is just after rainy season, from late March through mid-May. That's when the hillsides--hopefully finished sliding--are at their greenest, and L.A.'s most fragrant flowers are in bloom. We especially love the whacky variety of flora and fauna you can see all in the same yard (daffodils, gladiolus, and other bulbs plus a pine tree, a large cactus, and a gigantic rubber tree plant all on one beautifully manicured corner lot in Beverly Hills), and at night, the glorious scent of them all comes alive. We especially love an evening drive through Benedict Canyon, and given the easy access to abundant art supplies and the downtown workrooms just minutes away, we can't help wondering if maybe, just maybe, this is where the Easter Bunny resides during his time off.
