Cool Stuff We Love May 2005

Cool Keys from Victor's Shoe Repair

When members of a certain website needed new keys, the Webmaster went to Victor's, a neighborhood shoe repair shop that also happens to make keys. Expecting the usual, run of the mill brass keys, they were gleefully surprised when Webmaster Jinjer presented them with a key with a lovely flower design on a pink background, and another with a blue background. "They also have sports designs with footballs and soccer balls, and other designs too" said she. "Most excellent!" said the Ed-in-Chief (well not really, but we're trying to entertain you), "Let's have all our keys this way from now on!" And so they did. (P.S. The close proximity to several studios makes Victor's a virtual gallery of autographed 8x10s of their celebrity clientele, so you have something to look at while you wait. But look fast, because Victor's is usually lightening quick.) Victor's Shoe Repair, 3810 West Verdugo Avenue, Burbank, CA, between Pass Avenue and Hollywood Way.

Trader Joe's Multigrain Pita Chips with Sesame Seeds

Looking for a healthier alternative to potato chips? Step right up and dip these into your hummus. Trader Joe's Multigrain pita chips have 60% less fat than potato chips, a hearty crunch, and you'd never know they were low-fat. We like them best with Trader Joe's or other organic hummus, but they're also great with tuna or chicken salad, and they'd be an interesting alternative for nachos. (They also make a great low-fat substitute for croutons on salads.) Carbs? Yes, loaded with them. But being whole grain, they're the kind that's good for you, and we'd much rather have a small handful of these than a slice of whole wheat bread. Available at Trader Joe's.

Stacy's Baked Pita Chips (Simply Naked flavor)

Stacy's have all the attributes of Trader Joe's--the Simply Naked flavor our Ed munched on as she wrote this had a mere 130 calories and 4 grams of fat. They also have one extra attribute: they come in five flavors, including the soon-to-be-released Multigrain. Try crushing a few of the Parmesan Garlic and Herb flavor over your next Caesar salad instead of croutons...Fabulous! And, for those times when you can't stand your food program another minute and have to have something sweet, the Cinnamon Sugar flavor are sooo much better for you than killing it with a cookie...Available in supermarkets, or write the company via their website to inquire: www.pitachips.com

Coffee Nips

Has your food program or lack of finances cut off your supply of Starbuck's or Coffee Bean? Taste junkies rejoice; these chewy, long-lasting hard candies have the same flavor as your beloved latte, without the caffeine, fat, or high calorie content. Nips have been around for over 75 years and were featured in 1930's women's magazines as an upscale treat for bridge parties. Now around $1 a box on sale, we the masses can get our fix, too. Be careful if you're using Coffee Nips as a low cal substitute on a food program, though; they're still 25 calories and 1.5 grams of fat per piece, so don't overdo it! But they still beat the calories and fat of most coffee drinks. Available online at Candy Favorites or at drugstores and some supermarkets in 7 flavors, including Coffee, Vanilla Almond Cafe, and non-coffee flavors like chocolate, caramel, and peanut butter. (Nips are not for everyone; the shape and texture of these candies make them a choking hazard for children.)
