How to: Goal Setting 101
H. L. Hunt said, "Decide what you want, decide what
you are willing to exchange for it. Establish your priorities, and go to work". This
10-step plan shows you how.
1. Brainstorm and write down what you'd like to do, be, and have. Nothing is too
wild here; this is a Dream List to get your brain cells working. Set it aside and go back
to it periodically.
2. Cross off the items that don't matter to you, are too off the wall, or that
aren't important enough to you to work toward.
3. Make a second list of what you really want to do, be, and have, incorporating
items from the first list that you want to work toward. What is the lifestyle like?
What are you wearing? What do you do on a daily basis? Who's with you? How do you feel
when you achieve this? What is the experience like? Be specific.
4. Determine your current situation. What obstacles do you face? Write them down.
5. List the resources you have to make #3 come true. (People are resources too.)
6. List the goals that will take you from #4 to #3. Break each one down into a
series of smaller goals that can each be accomplished in one hour or less.
7. Assign each goal a priority of A, B, or C. Use these priorities to formulate your
daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly to-do list, and get to work.
8. Use only one calendar. Repeat: Use only one calendar.
9. Spend 20 minutes at the end of each day going over the next day's events and
to-dos.
10. At the end of each day, record your accomplishments, no matter how trivial. If
you're stuck, start with "Went over tomorrow's events and to-dos."
Remember, the more "unobtainable"
the goal, the more time and sacrifice required to obtain it.
