LAUGH LINES & THE PROFESSIONAL ARTIST
MBADC: What about the laugh lines? How might procedures to correct those
affect a singer?
BA: The procedures to correct laugh lines are very minimal procedures
where both the downtime and the muscle of the face are not directly affected by the
procedure, and I dont think that they would have any effect on the professional
singer. And this goes back again to the cosmetic surgery game plan for the performing
artist. That is a great procedure where it causes subtle improvement but makes a big
difference for the patient, but not many people will notice a dramatic change in the
patient. [The plan is] short downtime, to not affect a professional singer, to not make a
very dramatic change in the way the artist looks.
MBADC: What would be the procedure for the professional singer who has
laugh lines?
BA: There are [several] ways of approaching it. What a lot of people use
right now are non-surgical techniques, for example injecting substances like collagen,
Restylane or Radiance--these are what we call fillers. They fill in that area for the
laugh line. Thats one approach to correcting the laugh line. Generally speaking,
theyre temporary measurescollagen lasts 3 months, Restylane lasts 6 months,
Radiance lasts about a year--so they would have to be repeated. The alternatives are minor
surgical procedures where we use what we call a cheek lift
The laugh lines are caused
by this malar fat pad. Its a fat pad that comes down with gravity as we age. And we
would move the fat pad back into its normal anatomic location. And in doing so, this
procedure takes about 45 minutes and has a fairly good longevity of lasting about 4-5
years, and the downtime is about three to four days. And it does make a very nice change
without a significant downtime. So I usually offer both non-surgical as well as surgical.
And some people choose to do the non-surgical, and some people choose to do the surgical,
depending on what their needs are.
