Facial Plastic Surgery and Its Effects on the
Voice with Babak Azizzadeh, MD
Dr. Azizzadeh is a Board Certified, Harvard trained Facial Plastic Surgeon,
specializing exclusively in facial plastic surgery. As a clinical faculty of the UCLA
School of Medicine, Dr. Azizzadeh is actively involved in teaching facial plastic surgery
to residents and medical students. In addition to his busy surgical practice, Dr.
Azizzadeh has also been actively involved in several humanitarian causes such as the
Medical Missions for Children (MMFC) and the R.O.S.E. Fund (Regaining One’s
Self-esteem), a national non-profit organization committed to ending violence against
women and children by assisting survivors in regaining their self-esteem. He has operated

THE NEEDS OF THE PROFESSIONAL ARTIST
MBADC: Many throat doctors advise singers to proceed with caution when
going about things like rhinoplasty because it can affect the voice. What do you advise
for patients who are singers but who want to improve their appearance?
BA: Well, with appearance, whether it’s cosmetic surgery of the
face, the nose, the eyelids, you have to proceed with caution. I think one of the most
important things that you have to consider is, you have to make sure that you have an
excellent discussion with the surgeon that’s going to be doing these operations for
you so that they know your needs; say you’re a professional singer, or professional
artist [and that] you do have special needs. And the most important thing, especially with
doing facial rejuvenation, which includes facelifts, eyelid surgery, things like that, for
the professional artist, is to avoid what we call the extreme makeover. Unfortunately the
TV show has definitely brought to light plastic surgery in an interesting fashion, but for
a professional artist, performer, you just can’t do extreme makeovers. So you really
need to discuss with your surgeon what we coin a "cosmetic surgery game plan"---
which would be doing more minor procedures over an extended period of time to really avoid
significant changes in the facial appearance.
