What is Clear
Channel
Q. What is Clear Channel, and why are so many people in the music business
against it?
A. Check out our MBADC Music Industry Glossary entry for Clear Channel.
As for our own opinions of Clear Channel, because they're so large and are
involved in every aspect of the music industry from radio and TV to venue
ownership, promotion, and even the pay toilets at some of the venues,
working at the national level of the commercial music industry in 2005--and
even some aspects of being an independent musician, if you want to make a
living at it--requires maintaining a civil relationship with Clear Channel. We have loyal
friends who now work for Clear Channel because their companies were bought
out by Clear Channel, as well as loyal friends who lost their jobs due to
Clear Channel buy-outs (including at companies some of our staff members
used to work for), so MusicBizAdvice.com tries to maintain as much
journalistic neutrality as possible.
However, it should be noted that when MusicBizAdvice.com contacted Clear
Channel's corporate office recently to get current numbers on how many radio
and TV stations they own (last updated on the website in 2001), after
checking out MusicBizAdvice.com their P.R. people tried to get our Editor to
tell them what we'd be writing about the company, asked for our
deadline...and did not get back to us with the figures before press time.
It seemed like an
easy-to-answer, straight-forward question to us...
...which is why we have Jinjer, our Researcher Extraordinaire, who found
this current list
of Clear Channel media holdings on the Columbia Journalism Review website.
