Each month, MusicBizAdvice.com answers your questions about the music industry.

Advice for song selection for vocal audition for talent competition

Q. What advice or tips would you give to someone who is doing a vocal audition for a talent competition? Are there certain types of songs you should lean toward (ballad vs. up-tempo)?
L.K.

A. Aside from the ability of the performer, song selection for that performer (also called song casting) is the second most important factor. For a breakdown of how to choose the perfect song for you, check out:
Song Selection 101: How to Choose the Right Cover Song for a Talent Competition or Audition, and Demo Song Selection: Cover Songs or No Cover Songs?

And finally, read our
American Idol Armchair Quarterback column from past seasons to see where past contestants went wrong, as well as what they did right.

Once you've chosen your song, take the lyrics to heart, and sing it so everyone in the venue feels it! Emotional impact and stage performance is every bit as important as hitting the notes.

Good luck!
