RHINOPLASTY (NOSE JOBS) & THE VOCALIST
MBADC: What about rhinoplasty?
BA: Everyone has avoided rhinoplasty in the past because of fear that it would
change the voiceand it does, to a certain extent. But it used to affect the voice a
lot more, because in the 80s and early 90s the technique that
plastic surgeons used to employ--and still many plastic surgeons are using--is what we
call a reductive rhinoplasty. They took a lot of cartilage out of both the external and
internal aspect of the nose, thereby really changing the entire resonance chamber of the
nose and affecting the register, voice, etcetera. Our approach is to really maintain a
strong nose, strong cartilage, avoid overresection of cartilage, and really to avoid
overresection of the internal aspects of the nose and what we call the turbinates, in
order to maintain almost the same nasal passageway--and do just subtle changes of the nose
that will probably not affect the voice, as well as the nasal passageway. So the whole
theory again is to really not go for a major change in the nasal shape and nasal breathing
passageway, but to do more minor and maintain the strength of both the external cartilages
and internal cartilages.
