MBADC: At what point does an artist need an agent?
SP: The artist needs an agent when they are ready to tour. When they are ready to
promote an album.
MBADC: Would that have to be a major label release, or could it be an independent
release?
SP: It could be either, but it should be a release with decent distribution to
make it worth touring.
MBADC: Describe the role of the agent with regard to a manager, and how they work
together.
SP: A manager is a career guidance counselor. They are there to sort of field the
offers and discuss the overall career of an artist. An agent is out there to procure
employment for an artist--to set up the deals, to set up the tours, to set up whatever
ancillary businesses an artist may want to pursue in terms of a career in commercials, a
career in television, motion pictures, whatever.
