MBADC: What tips do you have for artists on working most
effectively with their agent?
SP: The best tip I have is to not look at your agent as the sole source of your
employment; that an agent should be looked at as an extra set of hands and an extra voice
into the marketplace. An artist should continue to promote themselves, to continue to do
whatever they were doing, and consider their agent an extra set of hands. Too many
artists, as soon as they get an agent, turn it all over to the agent and sit back thinking
the work is all done, when in fact the work has just begun. You do your agent and yourself
an injustice when you take that attitude. An agent is really just an extra set of hands
and extra voice in the marketplace. And the agent and their new act really need to work
hand in hand to make it happen.
