MBADC: When youre looking for new artists, where do you
usually look?
SP: There are a couple of places to look. You look at what is popular regionally
around the country. Youre not going to find the next major star in a club in Los
Angeles, but you may find them in a club in Charlotte North Carolina. But they will also
have established themselves as a good regional attraction in Charlotte North Carolina,
with a following. A regional attraction with a following leads to a national act with a
following; because if theyre good enough to get a regional following, theyre
sure as hell good enough to get a national following. And I think that may be a little of
the old fashioned way to do it, but thats really where youre going to find an
act with staying power. Everything else that can be manufactured in a studio, those types
of acts youre going to find through an attorney or through a manager who may grab
something just on a lark and then get lucky.
