Backstage Spotlight™
December 2003 Talent Agent Scott Pang

Scott Pang has worked in the music industry for 24 years and has been an agent at both ICM and William Morris. Artists he’s worked with over the years include Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, Diane Reeves, David Lee Roth, and many others. Scott Pang was also the director of touring for the Ice Capades and Harlem Globetrotters. Currently he is an agent at ICM.

MBADC: How did you get started in the music business?

SP:
I started in college as a college concert director.

MBADC:
What was the first concert you ever did?

SP:
The first national act I put on was Kenny Loggins. The premiere of the Celebrate Me Home tour--the very first Kenny Loggins solo. Prior to that it was local acts.

MBADC:
Who are some of the artists you’ve worked with over the years?

SP
: I’ve worked with people like Diane Reeves, Rod Stewart, Barry Manilow, Manhattan Transfer, David Lee Roth…

MBADC:
Was that when he went solo?

SP:
Yes. Then last year we did the Hagar-Roth tour. I’ve worked with Sammy Hagar…

MBADC:
So you’ve worked with both Sammy and Dave at different times over the years?

SP:
Yeah, although Sammy wasn’t with me when we put the Hagar-Roth tour together. It was an adventure.

MBADC:
I’ll bet. What’s the most unusual problem you’ve had to solve with a booking?

SP:
The most unusual problem was allowing Jerry Lewis’s dog free in the first class cabin of an Air Italia flight when I booked Jerry in Italy.

MBADC:
Was it in the contract?

SP:
It was in the contract, yes. We had to put it in the contract because we wanted to make sure--because the promoter had to get it done.

MBADC:
Do you remember what kind of dog it was?

SP:
It was a tiny dog. But he didn’t want to fly it down below; he wanted it to run around. So we arranged it with Air Italia that Jerry Lewis was on board and had to get special permission.

MBADC:
Do you have favorite clients or managers to work with over the years? You probably can’t answer that, but I have to ask.

SP:
Your clients are always fun. No matter how much work they are, they’re always fun. And the managers, they’re all different. They’re all different types of people. That is the advantage and the joy of working at an agency--the variations of people.
