September 2003: In Memoriam
Daniel Lee: Head Stage Carpenter, Backstreet Boys
Previously worked with: N Sync, Barbara Streisand, Yanni
After working the Backstreet Boys show in Boston on September 10, 2001, Daniel John
Lee left the tour to fly home to L.A. to be present for the birth of his second daughter.
At 2:00 AM on September 11 he called his wife of six years, Kellie, to say, "I love
you, Ill be home soon."
According to many accounts, that phone call was completely in character with Dan. Even
after 10 years together, he still opened Kellies car door for her and often called
home several times a day to tell her he loved her.
Later that morning, Dan perished aboard highjacked American Airlines Flight 11, the first
plane to be flown into the World Trade Center.
He was 34.
Allison Danielle Lee, 8lbs, 7 oz, was born at 8:00AM two days later, on September 13,
2001. Kellie and Dans first daughter, Amanda, was born in 1999.
For the rest of the tour, Backstreet Boys dedicated "Show Me the Meaning of Being
Lonely" to Dan, and his photo appeared on the big screens during the song.
In a 2001 interview on VH-1.com, Backstreet Boy Nick Carter said, "We lost one of our
crew members who we saw every night. Our lives were in his hands every night."
A memorial fund has been set up to assist Kellie with expenses, as Dan had no insurance
little savings:
