Q & A
Each month, MusicBizAdvice.com answers your questions about the music industry.
Why is unauthorized sampling illegal?
Q: But Hip-Hop was BUILT on sampling - why can't I do it?
A: The laws tightened up in 1996 with revisions in the copyright (Federal)
laws to specifically address sampling and protect copyright owners. It also
saved people a lot of time in court, because there were infringement cases
prior to the law. The laws just helped clarify it all.
